Empowering First Nations Students Through Flexible, Respectful, and Culturally Aware Barista and Food Safety Training in Townsville

In a unique collaboration bringing real world skills, confidence, and cultural respect together, First Nations students recently participated in a flexible Barista Training and Food Safety Supervisor program delivered by Equality Education in Townsville. This initiative is more than just a training course, it’s a powerful demonstration of how education can transform lives when delivered the right way.

Equality Education’s approach stands out because it’s built around the needs of students, not the needs of a typical classroom. Students were able to complete their theory online with the support of a trainer face to face, this grew their confidence in using computers, followed by hands on practical training in a safe, supportive, and culturally aware environment. This flexible delivery meant that each participant could balance learning with their existing commitments, ensuring that no one was left behind.

One of the highlights of the program was the catering by Binas Kitchen, which supplied traditional First Nations food throughout the course. This thoughtful touch reinforced the importance of cultural identity in learning.

The feedback from students has been overwhelmingly positive. One student shared, “This is the best training I have been involved with. Arty treated us with more respect than others.” Another added, “It was made fun and not the boring classroom style. I really enjoyed coming every day as we were respected.” These sentiments capture the spirit of the program: learning doesn’t have to be dry and impersonal. It can be an experience that builds skills, confidence, and community.

Arty Burchett, Founder of Equality Education and a qualified trainer, was praised for his respectful and caring approach. “It was so helpful Arty helping us when we were stuck for transport,” one participant said. It’s gestures like these that make the difference, especially for students with no form of transport and Townsville known for not the best public transport options.

The Barista and Food Safety Supervisor training not only equipped participants with essential skills for hospitality jobs but also gave them the confidence to take on new opportunities. Students left with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment, making them job ready and empowered to succeed.

At Equality Education, we believe that training should be more than a box ticking exercise. It should be ethical, hands on, and delivered with heart. That’s why we go the extra mile to create a culturally safe and inclusive environment where every student is respected and supported. We know that when students feel respected, they learn better, and when they’re taught in a way that’s relevant to them, they thrive.

This program is a shining example of what can be achieved when training providers truly care about their students. We’re proud to have been a part of these students’ journeys and look forward to helping many more students achieve their goals in the future.
