In the world of vocational training, there’s an ongoing issue that affects all of us: the prevalence of dodgy training providers who fail to deliver quality, comprehensive education. From students being spoon-fed answers, to schools and businesses that overlook poor training practices, this problem undermines the integrity of our entire industry. For our training standards to truly serve learners, employers, and the wider community, we need everyone to take a stand against these practices.
At Equality Education, we’ve seen firsthand the impact of poor training on students. Many come to us feeling disheartened, treated like numbers rather than individuals, pushed into online modules with little to no support. Some students in some schools report that they’re simply given answers, while the practical, hands-on experiences essential to their growth are overlooked. This not only shortchanges students but also tarnishes the reputation of the entire training industry.
It’s not enough to notice the problem; we all have a role in fixing it. Schools, employers, students, trainers, and industry bodies must work together to hold training providers accountable. By prioritising ethical, high-quality training, we can set a gold standard and transform our industry into one that truly values learning and skill development.
Turning a blind eye to dodgy training practices contributes to a vicious cycle. When students are rushed through a course, given little time to absorb information, or not allowed to engage in practical activities, they enter the workforce unprepared. Employers are then left with a workforce that lacks essential skills, reinforcing negative stereotypes about vocational training. By choosing to ignore these issues, we’re allowing them to persist. We need to be active participants in calling out unethical training and demanding better for our students and industry.
Some argue that “reporting does nothing,” or that it’s easier to criticise from the sidelines. But if we don’t persist in advocating for change, then we too become part of the problem. Standing up may seem daunting, but by working together, we can drive change and strengthen the integrity of vocational training. When schools, employers, and trainers are united in demanding ethical, hands-on training that treats students as individuals, we can foster a more skilled, competent workforce.
Students deserve time to learn and absorb information, to engage in practical exercises, and to be seen as more than just numbers in a system. Training providers have an obligation to do more than just meet the minimum requirements—they should foster genuine learning, skill acquisition, and personal growth. At Equality Education, we’re committed to these values, and we urge others to join us in this mission.
Let’s make the choice to advocate for quality and ethical practices. Report dodgy providers, call out unethical training, and demand better. Together, we can set a gold standard and elevate our industry. It’s time to stop turning a blind eye and take action to ensure vocational training becomes a pathway to success for every student, rather than a disappointing, hollow experience.
It’s our responsibility—let’s ensure we’re a part of the solution.
